An 8,000 sq.m. new build 750 pupil school with enhanced community sports provision serving the new Great Kneighton community as part of Cambridge’s Southern Fringe growth area.
The school is designed around Danish school models with compact planning, allowing a large proportion of unstructured teaching with a high level of connectivity. The school also has a specialism in science and the design follows a high sustainability agenda including the school’s commitment to sustainable transport through cycling, walking and the low carbon guided bus.
Futurecity wrote the school’s Public Art Strategy. It sets a vision and delivery plan for integrating a science and technology led project that will be fully integrated in to the design and systems operation of the school. Leading technology based artists Umbrellium have been commissioned to develop and deliver a project that brings together staff, pupils, govenors and design team, and builds a ‘technological system’ that will push the forefront of how art and technology can enhance the daily lives of a buildings users through interaction and software development.
This project builds on many of Umbrellium’s recent commissions, including the highly successful installation at the Barbican Centre in London in 2104.
