Southwark is home to some of London’s finest independent theatres: the Globe, Young Vic, Unicorn Theatre, Southwark Playhouse, Union Theatre, Jerwood Space, National Theatre Studio, English Touring Theatre and the Miller, whilst on the Lambeth boundary there is the National Theatre and the Old Vic. A cultural audit of the area showed the opportunity for a new theatre district for London, drawing on the success of the London Design Festival and Clerkenwell Design District. The Theatre District concept envisaged a branding approach to connecting theatres and the related businesses trading in costumes, props, set and lighting design, theatre architecture and food and beverage.
