Founded in 2002 by Stuart Wood, Flo Ortkrass and Hannes Koch, rAndom International create artworks and installations that explore behaviour, reaction and intuition in relation to natural phenomena and the human form. Working at the intersection of science, design and art, the studio responds to recent developments in cognitive science and new media by creating works that encourage an active relationship between people and their surrounding environments, making the viewers’ participation fundamental. In 2012, they installed their Rain Room, a space where visitors could play in a perpetual shower of water without getting wet, in London’s Barbican Centre. After the great success at the Barbican, Rain Room was also presented as a major component of the MoMA PS1 exhibition ‘EXPO 1: New York’ in 2013. The design collective was showcased in ’21 | TWENTY ONE’ published by the V&A, among the best designers living and working in Britain who have come to prominence since the millennium.
