In 2017, Futurecity was part of a consortium of local and international talent leading the next phase of development of a visionary master plan for the Westmead Innovation Precinct.

With more than $3 billion committed by government, universities and the private sector, the Westmead Innovation Precinct is on a trajectory to increase high-value, knowledge-based jobs to more than 26,000 and increase student numbers to more than 10,000 by 2026. Westmead is Australia’s largest Health and Education Super Precinct and is an integral part of the Greater Sydney Commission’s vision for Greater Parramatta and the Olympic Peninsula (GPOP).

Westmead is extremely well placed to deliver important jobs and student places for western Sydney and beyond. The precinct has the potential to accommodate a new university campus, with up to 50,000 students and deliver up to 50,000 jobs, generating an additional $4.5 billion in economic output.

Futurecity conducted detailed research into existing government policies concerning Westmead, along with the rich history and heritage of the area, and reviewed the rise of innovation districts across the world, contributing ideas on the challenges and opportunities involved in developing a new world-class innovation precinct at Westmead.

Futurecity also attended a two-day design charrette in Western Sydney with all team partners, bringing a cultural lens to the development of design principles for the Westmead master plan. Our contribution included thought leadership, a global perspective, and creative and innovative ideas, adding value to the team’s thinking around urban design and the planning of the Westmead health and education precinct.
