Futurecity’s strategy for the Albert Embankment intends to support the realisation of Lambeth’s vision for Vauxhall as a newly emerging cultural quarter by using the art commissioning process to reinforce the interconnection of public realm along this stretch of riverside.
The cultural strategy builds upon the emphasis placed by Lambeth and the Nine Elms on the South Bank masterplan to make the public realm more permeable, softening the impact of the busy road with pockets of green space and engaging public art interventions, thereby encouraging residents, workers and visitors to rest, sit and spend more time along this stretch of the river.
The four approaches – Lead Artist Commission, Multi-use Furniture Commission, Connecting Communities and Pop-up Retail/Mobile vending structure – put forward in the strategy promote a more open and accessible environment, generating increased footfall, drawing people to the retail and commercial offers as well as animating the public realms of The Corniche, 22–29 Albert Embankment and Merano Residencies.
