Culture & Placemaking Strategy
2017
Futurecity was appointed by GPT, Brookfield and AMP to develop a cultural strategy for the Cockle Bay Wharf re-development.
Recognising Cockle Bay Wharf’s key location along Sydney Harbour’s foreshore and the on-going change in the immediate Darling Harbour precinct and the wider area, the challenge for the Cockle Bay Wharf cultural strategy was to create a new identity for the development that was distinctive, credible and bold, enabling it to become a key part of the city’s collective offer, at the same time as being recognised as a new cultural destination in its own right and a driving force behind the return of Darling Harbour to its former glory.
Futurecity proposed a cultural vision for Cockle Bay Wharf, which acknowledged Darling Harbour’s cultural position in the city, bringing it boldly into the 21st century – appealing to the large audiences who already visit the precinct and potential new audiences. For this vision to become a reality, Futurecity made recommendations for its integration across the scheme from the outset, so that it could influence the development design. Core themes were applied to all cultural activation and commissioning across the site and a range of delivery approaches were proposed to generate additional value and connectivity to the city and beyond.
