British artist James Hopkins changes everyday objects such as chairs, stools, tables, ladders and changes them into new structures and narratives. His ‘Angled Ball’ sculpture offers a contradiction, a series of seemingly random abstract angular forms, that from one particular viewpoint only, offer the viewer a four metre sculpture of the iconic black and white football used by amateur and professional footballers the world over.
His playful visual illusion is reminiscent of the Channel 4 idents, where seemingly random elements of an urban landscape line up to define the number ‘4’.
The sculpture was unveiled by England football star Rachel Yankey at its site on the North Circular motorway, where some 100,000 people will see it every day.
Futurecity have managed and curated the commission, in partnership with Brent council. Ikea Wembley funded the commission as part of their Section 106 obligation.
