Sarah Carrington, our Senior Curator and Project Manager on the ground in Australia is speaking as part of “The spaces in-between: does size matter?” panel with Bob Perry of Scott Carver and David Tickle of HASSELL as part of the Sydney Architecture Festival. The panel examines public spaces and asks the age old question- does size really matter?

“In a rapidly growing city, our new buildings matter. But so do the spaces in-between. Great public space is about a backyard we can all share. But is size the only factor? Open space doesn’t need to be big to have a big impact. How do we make the most of the spaces we have; that welcome, include and remind us that it takes all types to make a city?  Hear how short term and long term interventions can change a city.

We look at the upside and downside of pop-up and the importance of short term pilots being connected to long term upgrade; we’ll explore the parklet phenomenon and the role of good developers who make placemaking work.  We want to get the good stuff on how we best intervene strategically – finding the right catalytic moves through clever strategic design, place design and activation.”

The Sydney Architecture Festival runs from the 2nd-5th October : is aims to be a forum to share design secrets, broadcast emerging ideas, and reveal the global networks and influences shaping Sydney right now, and for the future.
