Tracking Madrid is about cities and their contemporary development; the installation by Spanish artist Montserrat Soto was exhibited at the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid July 2005. It depicted the rapid expansion and urbanization of modern Madrid in an environment unable to cope.
Soto believes the rapid restructuring of Madrid has led to a certain ‘crisis in society, in its lifestyle and also in nature’. The exhibition exposed the simultaneous construction and destruction taking place in Madrid and show how incremental changes taking place over a small space of time eventually alters the face of the city.
The exhibition included five short documentary films projected onto the gallery walls, archive materials streamed to PDAs as well as background to the project and a live internet feed of images from sites on the periphery of Madrid to a web site. Using BT’s Flexible Media Tools software and Fastnets high quality video streaming technology, Soto was able to browse and annotate the film segments, altering the perception of her artwork to encompass the viewer.
