In 2018, Futurecity were invited to join the UN Studios and Cox Architecture team for the international competition for the $2 billion Southbank by Beulah development at 118 City Road in Melbourne’s riverside arts precinct. Southbank by Beulah required an inventive proposal at mixed-use lifestyle precinct of over 220,000 sqm with 23,000 sqm of public programs; luxury apartments, commercial offices, 5 star hotel, an entertainment centre, technological display centres, world-class retail, cultural precinct and public green spaces.

The competitive resulting proposal for ‘The Green Spine’ won the competition, selected out of six exceptionally international bids, with the cultural components developed by Futurecity that provided a crucial point of difference in the scheme. ‘The Green Spine’ offers a transformative expression of future living. A creative fusion of art, nature and technology woven across its tiered stratum, the scheme’s layers of creative usage of civic space, art commissions and programming, putting its cultural district institutions on a public show represent a bold and ambitious commitment to cultural innovation.

Futurecity’s developing Arts & Cultural Strategy (that includes cultural anchors) guides how to connect culture through all tenancies (commercial, residential) and make resilient roots with the community by leveraging the site’s unique position within the Southbank Arts Precinct.

Following unanimous support from the City of Melbourne’s Future Melbourne Committee in 2020, the Victorian State Government has officially given the green light ‘fast-tracked’ support to one of Melbourne’s most ambitious and forward-thinking projects to date.

‘Outdoor Living’ by Atong Atem

Melbourne’s Hanover House – and future site for STH_BNK by developer Beulah – was been brought to life by artist Atong Atem, who was commissioned to animate two facades of the building. Futurecity was appointed by Beulah to curate an artwork to transform the building through June 2022, with the brief to creatively showcase Beulah’s commitment to sustainability, wellness and technology by incorporating low-VOC and low-energy consumption materials.
