Futurecity developed a Culture & Placemaking Strategy for London Dock, a mixed-use development on the former News International site in Wapping. Our strategy embraces its heritage and location outlining how these could be reflected through embedded arts and creative industry provision to help create a dynamic new district for London. For the first time in more than 200 years London Dock and its unique heritage assets will soon be open to the public and its historic trading history celebrated and reinterpreted across the site. As part of the strategy the Grade II listed Pennington Street Warehouse will temporarily house 90 affordable artists’ studios managed by Bow Arts. The charity’s education programme will offer artists employment opportunities, enabling them to pay rent and develop new creative skills.
Two direct outcomes of this project were the Bow Arts artist studios and the Trading Words typographic pavement trail. Both were Futurecity recommendations in the cultural strategy documents.
