The aim of Futurecity’s cultural strategy for Creekside Village was to influence all aspects of the development from the architecture and landscaping to public arts and marketing, utilising the unique resources of a thriving, diverse set of existing creative industries, with the iconic LABAN at its heart and a host of quality cultural provision nearby including the Albany theatre, APT studios and Cockpit Arts. The cultural strategy attempted to preserve the uniqueness of Deptford/Creekside, celebrate the cultural and ethnic diversity of the area and provide cultural connectivity to Deptford and Greenwich.
The strategy’s vision was for a cultural and creative centre for Creekside and Deptford, all set within a beautifully designed urban environment. The proposals aimed to help rejuvenate the heart of Deptford Creekside, at a time a largely derelict site at a gateway to the historic Greenwich town centre. While already an established creative hub in South-East London, the strategy proposals aimed to make the area an important destination and help transform it into a dynamic cultural place that celebrates its rich industrial history, whilst offering a high profile example of how the ideas economy is reshaping the capital city.
