Futurecity was appointed by Hammerson to develop a ‘culture-led playbook’ for their Martineau Galleries development in Birmingham. The 7.5-acre gateway site will form a signature gateway to Birmingham from the proposed Curzon Street terminal. High-quality public realm will include a new public square and boulevard, up to 1,300 homes and 130,000sqm of workspace.
The site forms a significant part of Birmingham City Centre, with strategic links to the wider area, including the Bullring Estate. A new creative neighbourhood will extend the High Street and embrace key future connections, including train, tram and bus networks, the new Curzon Street station and metro extension, creating a natural flow through the city. Plans for the site have been designed by Glenn Howells Architects.
Futurecity’s work promotes Birmingham’s ambition for growth and further strengthen the city’s position as one of the leading centres for business, leisure, education and arts and culture. The Playbook reflects and delivers the strategic cultural placemaking aims of Birmingham’s Mayor and city council at pre-development stage.
