Services: Placemaking Strategy

Developer Watkin Jones have appointed Group Futurecity to develop a cultural strategy for one of the last development sites in Nine Elms. Three student buildings, 80 affordable homes, 779 student apartments and cultural, community and commercial uses will replace a retail warehouse and demolished BMW service centre on Battersea Park Road. The site is close to the new Battersea Power Station tube station.

The new public space and landscaping will be car-free with 785 long-stay cycle spaces and fifty-five new trees. The developer aims to create green, creative public space that connect the Linear Park and new public open spaces at Battersea Power Station.

The scheme will deliver a range of new local jobs as a springboard into the wider employment opportunities of Nine Elms and deliver a biodiversity net gain compared to the current site, renewable energy – a fossil fuel free heating strategy for the development, operational and embodied carbon and BREEAM outstanding for the student housing development.

Futurecity have provided strategic placemaking advice on Battersea Power Station, New Covent Garden Market, and the new Royal College of Art campus.
