About this Event
Young Creators UK (YCUK) is a Brixton based not-for-profit company – a unique and powerful blend of a creative agency, youth service and community empowerment project. They represent the spirit of Lambeth as young, multi-cultural creators that want to leverage their perspectives to bring new energy to commercial production.
Since December, they have been in temporary residence at 72 Upper Ground, as a part of the PREVIEW initiative, giving their work more space through the height of the COVID pandemic to ensure that their business did not suffer. PREVIEW is the meanwhile programme for 72 Upper Ground running until June 2021. As this meanwhile programme has always had an end date, Futurecity requested YCUK to participate in a Placemaking Happy Hour, at their current South Bank space, to talk about their future and what their visions of a ‘future city’ look like.
“We are a trojan horse to the creative sector – unfunded, unapologetic and uncompromising. We create change.”
– Young Creators UK
This is an opportunity to hear directly from the voices of young creators and explore how the industry can offer support and mentorship to enable and empower their contribution to arts and culture in London. PREVIEW’s objective is to function as a transparent Living Lab, where Lambeth practitioners gain space for this limited time and participate in design workshops and consultation that informs Futurecity’s Cultural Vision for the future re-development for 72 Upper Ground.
In this Happy Hour, Futurecity Head of Strategy and Cultural Director will be in conversation with a handful of Young Creators to share their work and vision; discuss their experience on the South Bank, and their commitment to be force for change in the creative sector.
Futurecity advises based upon what is coming – and we want to share our opportunity to learn from and with the Young Creators with a greater audience. We want to live stream this event from their podcast booth with exceptional views and help amplify their work – so that they may find their next Lambeth home with a lucky landlord.
Introducing our creative speakers:
Yasmin Keil, Senior Director, YCUK
“How the f*** will going to art school build me a career in the creative sector?” A question I asked myself before dropping out of further education.
18 months on, I’m co-leading Lambeth’s fastest growing creative agency – YCUK. A Visual artist by trade, change maker by necessity and reluctant leader.
Chris Taylor, Co-Founder, YCUK
A Social and Media Entrepreneur. A photographer who’s worked with major brands, a humanitarian, media consultant and youth worker with 10 years’ frontline experience. Chris Taylor brought these skills together over the last 5 years to build socially impactful, creative youth, community and media enterprises. Co-founder of YCUK.
Nhu Huynh’s, Film Student, YCUK
Film student, dedicated Danny DeVito fan, and a force to be reckoned with. Whilst balancing my last year of school, work and being a leader at YCUK, I’ve started building my career – impacting the world through the art of storytelling and creativity, with my end goal always wanting to generate change for good.
Andy Robinson, Head of Strategy, Futurecity
Andy creates and leads a diverse portfolio of culture and placemaking programmes, working closely between clients and the local authorities’ vision for innovation and growth in the city. He transforms strategic thinking into deliverable programmes of public art commissions and cultural partnerships, building and integrating new communities across the city.
Sherry Dobbin, Partner, Futurecity
Sherry Dobbin is Partner at Futurecity. She is also Chair of the Urban Art Forum UK for the Urban Land Institute-UK, a member of the Cultural Co-location Advisory Group for Creative Estuary, is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and part of the London Collective. Sherry has worked across all artforms for thirty-five years, led cultural organisations, and curated for public realm in four continents.
“We’ve heard about people’s interests in having their stories heard about coming, being and belonging here. The lived experience of Lambeth’s communities, individual and shared stories will be explored – points of origin, relationships, home-making – confirming and enhancing a sense of personal and communal identity.”
– Radical Hearts Open Minds, London Borough of Culture Bid
