There are only a couple more weeks left of the sold-out run of ‘The Boy Who Climbed Out of His Face’, a site-specific show by immersive theatre group Shunt at The Jetty, Greenwich Peninsula’s brand new outdoor venue on the river, just south of the O2. With a 4-star review from Time Out and listed as both Critic’s Choice and one of Time Out’s Top Ten Things To Do in August, the event – loosely based on the novels Heart of Darkness and The Water Babies – runs until 28th September.

Futurecity brokered and developed this cultural partnership as part of our placemaking work for Knight Dragon. We identified the former Coaling Jetty as an ideal location for a new permanent cultural venue – currently still in development – and recommended a programme of pop-up events on the disused structure in the interim period until the building is constructed. ‘The Boy Who Climbed Out of His Face’ launches a series of events on The Jetty which will be curated by Knight Dragon’s Kaia Charles.

This is the first outdoor performance by Shunt whose work in the last decade includes The Architects, Money, Tropicana and the shunt lounge. A temporary performance space has been built out of shipping containers, alongside a bar, food and an accompanying programme of live music and entertainment. See The Jetty’s website for details: thejettygreenwich.co.uk.

‘Every 10 minutes 30 people will disappear every 10 minutes and are spat out 45 minutes later.’ Shunt

Where was I?
Who was that strange man?
What was wrong with his face?

I will take you up the back stairs, but I must bandage your eyes first, for I never allow people to see those back stairs of mine. Charles Kingsley, The Water Babies

The last word he pronounced was – your name. Joseph Conrad, Heart of Darkness

Tickets: £10 from the Barbican’s box office. It’s always worth checking to see if there have been returns!  And it’s always worth going down to The Jetty anyway for the great food/bar/entertainment and unbeatable location.

Performance times: 6.30pm, 7.00pm, 7.30pm, 8.00pm, 8.30pm. Bar open until 11.00pm.
