The largest fruit, vegetable and flower market in the UK, New Covent Garden Market (NCGM) supplies 40 per cent of fresh fruit and vegetables in London and is used by 75 per cent of London florists. The market is a focus for 200 sustainable produce businesses employing more than 2,500 people. The market has a lively history to draw upon and the opportunity to create a unique, distinct London identity drawing on the food, flower and garden produce industries it houses. These trades form the basis of the scheme’s creative strategy – Use the creative and knowledge economies to contribute towards the animation and commercial offer of the developments. The intention is to create a district with a distinct character: a new iconic London destination for food and culture. To engage, communicate and capitalise on the site’s resources, expertise and strong connection to horticulture, food and flowers; through production, distribution, preparation and education.
